A book called “The Shack” came out in 2008 and exploded in the Christian market. Christians everywhere began to praise this “amazing book” that helped them understand the trinity. I have heard every side of the controversy that sparked from the writing of this book but I want to know your thoughts. Here are some videos that showcase both sides of the issue:
So what are your thoughts? Is this book a “heresy” as Driscoll suggests, or is it something else that isn’t “bad”?

I loved The Shack! I believe it was inspirational and really deepened my faith because I was able to understand the Trinity better. i believe The Shack wasn't supoosed to follow traditional "rules," it was the author's portrayal. No one is saying that God the Father is actually a woman, it is SYMBOLISM. Read The Shack, if you haven't already! You won't be able to put the book down!
I don't normally read Fiction – but I Loved "The Shack"! It is a very creative piece of literature – in my opinion – that brilliantly displays truths about God's grace, mercy, relationships and unconditional love – here is one of my favorite excerpts:
“The trouble with living by priorities, is that it sees everything as a hierarchy, a pyramid. If you put God at the top, what does that really mean and how much is enough? How much time do you give me before you can go on about the rest of your day, the part that interests you so much more?”
“I don’t want a piece of you and a piece of your life. Even if you were able, which you are not, to give me the biggest piece, that is not what I want. I want all of you and all of every party of you and your day.”
“I don’t want to be first among a list of values: I want to be at the center of everything. When I live in you, then together we can live through everything that happens to you. Rather than a pyramid, I want be the center of a mobile, where everything in your life – your friends, family, occupation, thoughts, activities – is connected to me but moves with the wind, in and out and back and forth, in an incredible dance of being.” “And I, (the Holy Spirit), I am the wind.”
Posting about the second video (the interview with the author):
This guy tried to bridge the gap that Jesus already filled. (3:14) That is the reason for the cross. We ARE to fear God the Father because He is holy and we are unjust sinners. We have wronged God Almighty! It is only because of the blood of Christ that we have access to Him because outside of Christ we are unholy. Christ taught that we should be perfect just as our Father in heaven is perfect (Matthew 5:48).
The only way to do that is through abiding in Him and believing that we also will be raised one day with Christ in His likeness. Romans 6:4-6, "Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin."
Christ's life IS our example. We are to be sanctified into His likeness. This guy says things that sound spiritual, but you can tell by listening to him that he doesn't have an accurate understanding of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
People have itching ears. This guy is definitely scratching a few.
This guy's theology is so far off. Did he ever quote Scripture? He confuses the Holy Spirit's work in our lives. (at 5:42) Regardless of his point here, he has not based it on Scripture but his own ideas. Now I admit I can make mistakes. We are all human and flawed. That is why we cling to God and the words that He has left us of His truth.
John 14:15-17 is clear: Jesus said, “If you love Me, keep My commandments. And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you."
(Look back at 3:03) – Yes we go to God the Father! Paul wrote that "there is one God and one mediator between God and Christ – the Man Christ Jesus" (1 Tim 2:5). And in Romans 5:1-2, "Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God."
fixing a typo: 1 Tim 2:5 reads,"For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus,"
